Winter time in Santa Barbara may lack snow, below 50-degree temperatures and ski slopes, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a pulse on the holiday spirit. No matter how you celebrate, where you travel to or how warm your home is, giving during this time of year is a great way to unite your community. Santa Barbara has one of the densest populations of non-profit organizations, many of which look forward to the holiday generosity. Here are a few that may interest you to round out your gift-getting list for 2016:
Organic Soup Kitchen: OSK serves nutrient-dense soups to cancer patients and those with degenerate diseases. All year, but especially during the holidays, this organization donates soups and looks for help serving, delivering and financially backing their mission. They even use local ingredients and produce to keep S.B. at the root of their soups. Hot soup is a luxury for so many during these cozy winter months, and Santa Barbara offers a way to provide that for those who need it most.
Hospice of Santa Barbara: Hospice of SB provides compassionate care to those impacted by serious illnesses and bereavement. From family services to counseling and grief workshops, the organization operates due to donors and volunteers. During the holidays, Hospice of Santa Barbara puts together a wish list for individuals and families in need. Items include things such as art supplies, gas cards, airline miles, dinners and more. These can make a difference for those impacted during a time where many of us are celebrating with cheer.
Transition House: It’s always a pleasure to spend holidays with family, but some Santa Barbara residents are without a home or family members. Transition House gives generous gifters the opportunity to provide a true holiday celebration for transient youth within the community. There are options ranging from becoming a “Secret Santa” to choosing an ornament to school-based giving trees.
Foodbank of Santa Barbara County: The Foodbank of SB County seeks to transform hunger into health all year round, but they also run a holiday drive during the Winter to provide individuals and families with food and nutrients. The non-profit organization allows you to provide food for certain demographics or give willingly and allow them to divvy food as is seen necessary. This provides some delicious and nutritious holiday meals for many Santa Barbara hopefuls who need it most!
The list of local organizations who can benefit from a little extra holiday cheer is a long one. Feel free to find an organization or gift-giving option that fits your needs, or choose an option from above. Happy holidays, Santa Barbara! May yours and our community’s be filled with cheer!
